Simplicity Series: Sparkly Black Pearl + Pop of Dark Teal

Continuing my Simplicity Series with this very simple yet fun eye look using only a cream eyeshadow and a pencil eyeliner. As stated previously, I love using cream eyeshadows when doing simple looks. They’re so versatile in that they can be used either alone or as an eyeshadow base. For this look, I applied the cream eyeshadow to my lid with my index finger. After applying the color to the lid, I took that index finger (without adding any additional product) and just pressed my finger into the crease area to fade the color upwards. I smudged a pencil eyeliner on my lower lashline to give a pop of color. The good thing about this look is that you can use any color eyeliner on the lashline to give a pop of color without being too overbearing. If you’re one to shy away from color, this is an easy way to test the waters.

FOTD: Soft Daytime Smokey using Urban Decay Naked 3

Here’s a daytime appropriate Smokey eye using the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. This is a gorgeous palette complete with rose gold toned eyeshadows! A couple of the colors like Dust and Trick have crazy fallout unfortunately, but the other colors are rather smooth.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick Swatches + Pics

When Anastasia Beverly Hills released the new Liquid Lipsticks on her website, I had to hop on it! I ordered 4 of the 20 new shades available. First impressions, they remind me of the Stila All Day Liquid Lipsticks and the Sephora Cream Lip Stains. They have the same creamy texture, opaque coverage, and matte finish. I purchased:

“Pure Hollywood” – nude beige pink
“Sweet Talker” – watermelon pink
“Bloodline” – crimson
“Potion” – deep eggplant

I’m sure a lot of women of color are curious about how these lipsticks will look on them. So for skin tone reference, I am a MAC NC44 (NC45 in the summer), NARS Tahoe, MUFE HD #170.

I initially applied “Pure Hollywood” alone, but it was giving me powdered donut vibes (we all know that “look”), so I reapplied it with a lip liner which makes it wearable for my tastes. It’s a really pretty nude, and paired with MAC Spice lip liner, I find it gorgeous. I preferred to use a lip liner with “Sweet Talker” as well. While it didn’t give the powdered donut look, the color is borderline neon-ish on my skin, so I used MAC Beet lip liner along with it. Both “Bloodline” and “Potion” did not require lip liner for me to wear.

These were launched January 7 on both Anastasia Beverly Hills website and Macy’s website. They will be available in all Macy’s (the Impulse section) stores in February.

FOTD: Lupita Nyong’o Inspired Shimmering Teal Eyes + Muted Red Lips

I’m a huge fan of Lupita Nyong’o and her various makeup looks. I love how she is not afraid to wear colorful eyeshadows and lip colors! Often times, women of color shy away from bright colors because we’ve always been told that those colors weren’t made “for us.” Not true! I love how Lupita just shows up and shows out with her colorful makeup and beautiful dresses. I believe that jewel tone colors look great on women of color, especially darker skinned women! Lupita definitely serves as an inspiration for us all!

This look is inspired by her red carpet makeup look from the 2014 BAFTA (British Academy of Film and Television Arts) awards show.

FOTD: Mileena of Mortal Kombat

More Halloween / Cosplay inspiration! I enjoyed completing this look, although it took a while to do due to the tedious nature of applying the “teeth.” I used french tip false nails (from Sally’s Beauty Supply) for the teeth. I had to cut and file each nail into the desired shape, whew!

FOTD: I’m Relentlessly Red

With this look I’m channeling my inner Janet. I love the bright lip color she wore in her “Come Back to Me” video from her Rhythm Nation 1814 album. The color reminded me of MAC’s retro matte lipstick in Relentlessly Red. I added a touch of gloss on top since the look in the video wasn’t completely matte.
